Welcome to SteelMan Challenge
The Fontana Rotary Club presents a race for the ages in the “City of Action“. This inaugural event will include a challenging reverse sprint triathlon and a 5k run to satisfy the hard-core athlete as well as the weekend warrior.
The course has been developed to stretch the limits of our participants and provide a challenge for the most seasoned athletes.
Steelman triathlon is a multi-sport event involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance events, which include swimming, running and bicycling.
The Steelman Triathlon is a Sprint distance and will begin in reverse order with the first leg consisting of a 5K (3.2) mile Run followed by a mountainous 12 mile bike climb and concluding with a 100 Yard swim.
For the non triathaletes, there will be a 5k Run which will be a separate but distinct event and will challenge the beginner to intermediate runners, but also be inviting to those younger participants. The triathlon competitors will be separated at the finish line and then transition into the bicycle leg of the event.
The bicycle Leg of the Steelman will be the difference maker in this event. What sets us apart is that most triathlons consist of riding on a course with few gradual inclines, but not the Steelman. According to course designer and race director Scott McAfee “What makes the steelman bicycle leg more challenging than most is the amount of climbing for such a relatively short course.” The ride can be ridden by beginners wishing to complete their first triathlon, however is designed to separate the prepared from the unprepared riders.
Scott McAfee is a two time state champion, Olympic trials competitor, Professional race team director and Course record holder for Breathless Agony Challenge ride.

The final leg of the event is held at the Fontana Park Aquatic Center, which features a full Olympic style pool. The completion of this grueling event will consist of a 4 full laps and a mad dash to the finish!!!
Words to the wise…Train mentally and physically, and on February 19 bring your “A” game.
A health/fitness expo will be included in the event, various local vendors and activities for the whole family. The Rotary Club of Fontana has been a staunch supporter for the research and cure for polio and portion of the proceeds will be donated to that and other local causes.
Fontana is the 2nd largest populated city in San Bernardino County, so we are expecting an excellent turn out of up to 2,000 participants.
